Fresh Air Fund

Do you remember your summer vacations? I do. I remember going up to my Aunt Dianne’s house in Washington and spending two weeks running around in the country. She lives on ten acres complete with a pond, a massive field, and a forest. For a suburban kid with a concrete backyard it was pure paradise. Those summers shaped so much of what I am today. They heavily influenced my love of nature and being outside. Those vacations gave me the opportunity to chase snakes, put on knee high mud boots and go searching for frogs, and spend hours in the forest pretending I was a pioneer.

I know I was lucky to have those summers. Alot of kids never get them. What’s even more concerning is that alot of kids have never even seen a forest! Can you imagine?  Luckily there is something we can do. We can help the Fresh Air Fund.

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for either one or two weeks. Youngsters who are re-invited by the same family may continue with The Fund through age 18, and many enjoy longer summertime visits, year after year. A visit to the home of a warm and loving volunteer host family can make all the difference in the world to an inner-city child. All it takes to create lifelong memories is laughing in the sunshine and making new friends.

The majority of Fresh Air children are from low-income communities. These are often families without the resources to send their children on summer vacations. Most inner-city youngsters grow up in towering apartment buildings without large, open outdoor play spaces. Concrete playgrounds cannot replace the freedom of running barefoot through the grass or riding bikes down country lanes.

If you live in this part of the country you can host a Fresh Air Child. These are kids just looking for the opportunity to play in the backyard, ride a bike, camp under the stars, roast marshmallows, learning to swim, and just having fun outside. Its nothing fancy or expensive. Its just a chance to be a kid out of the city.

If you don’t have the ability to host a child  then you can still donate to the cause. $5 or $500, every bit helps. For more information on the Fresh Air Fund, click here.

Pendants for Tuesday

The following post was written by Debi and Who Says Eight Is Enough. She helped me last year with the pendant sales while trying to raise money for Tuesday Whitt. This year Debi took the bull by the horns and asked Home Studios if they could help again. I hope you can give as generously this year as you did last.

A year ago HomeStudio helped in a fundraiser for sweet Tuesday Whitt.

Although, Tuesday passed away a year ago, she still continues to have a huge impact on many lives.

HomeStudios has GENEROUSLY created 3 new pendants to honor Tuesday and to help raise Pediatric Cancer Awareness.

Right now, if you order, 50% of the sales of these new pendants will go towards pediatric cancer research as a legacy to little Tuesday.

Please help support a great cause and take a look HERE.

This special offer is available from Feb 7th until Feb 21st, so please place an order now, and help fight Pediatric Cancer...for Tuesday.

Cookies for Cancer in Tuesday's Honor

This past Saturday I had the honor of participating in a bake sale through Cookies for Kids Cancer, a wonderful organization that helps individuals make a difference in the effort to raise money for pediatric cancer research. A bloggy friend of mine, Samantha, who I met because she was truly touched by Tuesday's story, put the bake sale together and asked me to join her. I was very excited to finally meet her in person and so happy to be able to do something in Tuesday's honor during Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. We set up shop at the city of Brea's Health and Wellness Festival and nervously hoped for about $250 in donations.

September 092

At first things were a bit slow. We didn't set prices on the baked goods and let people donate whatever they saw fit. Some people seemed to think the point was to get a good deal on their cupcake and dropped a measly 50 cents in the bowl. Others made up for the lack of generosity and gave $5  for their cookie. It warmed our hearts to see most people truly just want to give. Of course we had a few people who we wanted to just kick in the shins like the man who told us this bake sale wouldn't make a difference because it we wouldn't raise enough money. He went on and on about his wealthy friends and how much they donate to the City of Hope and then left a dollar in our bowl after taking two cookies. For a wealthy man, he was certainly cheap. There was also a man wearing a purple wolf shirt and a fanny pack who told us there was already a cure for pediatric cancer out there (evidently involving brown algae) and all we were doing was lining the pockets of researchers and doctors. Luckily people like them were far outnumbered by people who had nothing but positive things to say about our efforts. We even ran into someone who read's Tuesday's mom's blog! What a small world.

In the end we made over $400!!!! We were so thrilled with our success and we hope to do another bake sale in the future. I encourage everyone to check out Cookies for Kids Cancer here and set up a little fundraiser of your own. You truly can make a difference and it feels so good! I want to thank Samantha once again for putting this all together and letting me be a part of it. She is awesome!

PLEASE feel free to send your own versions of Tuesday's name, to let Jess know you think of Tuesday often too. (believe me when I say this, it helps Jess & family to know...)
