Hiking Through- A Guest Post

Today’s guest post comes from Paul Stutzman, the author of Hiking Through. Originally when I was contacted by his publicist the goal was for him to write an article about hiking the Appalachian Trail and provide some family tips. Instead, he found Tuesday’s story on my blog and decided to write about something that is so much more important. His sentiments  reflects my own desire to inspire families to get out and enjoy the world with each other. Family is such a gift and sometimes our time with them is cut tragically short. I hope you find Paul’s words just inspiring and heartfelt as I did.

Paul_Stutzman_5

Initially, I came to this blog as part of a virtual book tour, hoping to promote my new book. But after browsing through this site and reading Tuesday’s story, I simply want to write a message from my heart.

Cherish and enjoy your children, your spouse, your loved ones! Mary, my wife of 32 years, died of breast cancer in 2006. My life as I had known it was gone. And part of the pain I felt was in knowing that I had taken my wife and our life together for granted. My one goal in life was to be wealthy. In pursuit of that goal, I spent too much time at work and missed much of my children’s growing-up years. It was only after my wife was gone that I realized what had been mine—and I had failed to appreciate it fully.

A year after Mary’s death, I quit my job and hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, demanding answers from God and trying to find healing. Early in my hike, I met the man I called Sailor, who grew up on Cape Cod in the same neighborhood as the famous Kennedy family. When I first met him, I was quite impressed with his background, thinking that he was surely part of that “upper crust” society of wealth and privilege.

In fact, I never knew if Sailor was a millionaire or had only a few dimes. The Trail is a great equalizer, and bank accounts don’t mean much if you’re trudging alone through the wilderness. But I believe Sailor was one of the wealthiest men I met. His wealth lay in his family. Several times during the weeks I knew him, Sailor’s sons joined him for parts of the hike. His wife also walked part of the trail with him. That man has riches far greater than any bank account. Bank accounts swell and shrivel, as we all know, but memories made with our loved ones only grow more precious with time.

Whenever I had a chance on my hike, I tried to pass on this message: Enjoy and appreciate your spouse, your children, your loved ones TODAY, while you still have the opportunity.

After Paul Stutzman’s wife died, Paul quit his job to hike the Appalachian trail to giveHiking_Through himself time to think and to heal.  Hiking Through: Finding Peace and Freedom on the Appalachian Trail is his story.  A former restaurant manager, he is now retired and planning his next big adventure: a cross-country bicycle trip. Stutzman currently lives in Berlin, Ohio. To see pictures of his hike or to find out more about Paul and his book, visit his website at www.hikingthrough.com.

Pendants for Tuesday

The following post was written by Debi and Who Says Eight Is Enough. She helped me last year with the pendant sales while trying to raise money for Tuesday Whitt. This year Debi took the bull by the horns and asked Home Studios if they could help again. I hope you can give as generously this year as you did last.

A year ago HomeStudio helped in a fundraiser for sweet Tuesday Whitt.

Although, Tuesday passed away a year ago, she still continues to have a huge impact on many lives.

HomeStudios has GENEROUSLY created 3 new pendants to honor Tuesday and to help raise Pediatric Cancer Awareness.

Right now, if you order, 50% of the sales of these new pendants will go towards pediatric cancer research as a legacy to little Tuesday.

Please help support a great cause and take a look HERE.

This special offer is available from Feb 7th until Feb 21st, so please place an order now, and help fight Pediatric Cancer...for Tuesday.

One Year

1-1.jpg picture by debi90

I was at the park with my own little ones when I got the call from her mother. She told me there was nothing more anyone could do and they were going home to say goodbye to their precious Tuesday. It all gets fuzzy from there. I remember heaving sobs, trying to get out words of comfort, and just only being able to say “I’m sorry” over and over. The fight was over. A few short days later, Tuesday would go home to God. That next week I was a robot. Making phone calls and arranging travel plans with women who all had babies the same age as Tuesday. I was going to say goodbye to one of my best friend's babies. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right.

Tuesday changed my life. She helped me truly see God in a way I never knew possible. She helped me grow closer to friends who are now like my sisters. She helped me love my own children more than I ever knew I could. She helped me realize I need to help raise awareness for all the little babies who die of this horrible disease.

Lately, I have been paralyzed. I know of another child who just went home to God after fighting this disease. Her story was so similar to Tuesday. It was too close to home. I have tried to hide from all of this but God keeps shoving it in my face. Now I pray for strength to do something more. Strength to attack this monster head on and make a difference.

I am still mourning sweet Tuesday. I suppose I am in denial. Denial that this could really happen. Denial that it happens every day. I want to get out of denial but damnit it’s so much easier to stay here. So now I turn to God and ask him for strength to move forward.

My mourning is nothing compared to what her family must feel. I won’t even try to imagine what it must be like. I think of them daily, constantly, every time I glance down at that yellow bracelet on my wrist. They are doing an amazing job at moving on but I know every day must be a struggle of epic proportions.

Please remember Tuesday. Remember her light. Her courage. Her strength. Her gift. She was an angel on earth and now she is an angel at home in heaven. I know we will see her again. I know her family will once again be whole. But until then, I mourn.

I love you Tuesday.

Watcha Gonna Do?

As some of you may have noticed, I have been MIA lately. Things have been been not so fun in our neck of the woods. My mom took a nasty fall on Halloween and broke her hip. I have spent most of my free time at the hospital. Additionally, I have been sick for almost three weeks. It started as a flu and turned into a double ear/sinus infection. Not fun. I am hoping to start to get caught up on blogging as soon these antibiotics start to take effect and my mom gets settled at home but until then, I will be a bit scarce.

In the meantime, I would REALLY appreciate you taking 5 minutes check to out a post my friend Debi did by clicking here.  It is about a new website and a cause very close to my heart, pediatric cancer. PLEASE take a look at the site (my dear friends, the Whitts are involved in this project. They lost their daughter Tuesday to neuroblastoma.) and pass the link on to others via your blogs or email. It is so important that we raise awareness so pediatric cancer can begin to get more attention and more funding. September was Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month and how many times did you see any mention of it in the media? I never did. Of course we all knew that October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many of us participated in fundraising. I think we need to have that kind of awareness of cancers that kill little kids every day. Please help us in spreading awareness for the cause. It only takes a few minutes of your day and can lead to bigger and better things for families forced to endure the struggles that pediatric cancer brings. Thank you and I hope to be back in the blogosphere again soon!

Neuroblastoma, Again...

Today I got news that I was convinced I would never hear again. I know another child with neuroblastoma.  He is the 7 year old son of a friend who was part of the original group of ladies I met online while pregnant with Mari and Ben. We were all pregnant with twins at the same time and looking for information and support from people going through the same thing. We all formed bonds that went beyond friendly chat on a Baby Center board and moved to a private website where we could share our lives with one another.  We all banded together to do everything we could for Tuesday and her family when she was sick with neuroblastoma. And now, another family in our small group will be facing the battle of their lives. I can't begin to wrap my head around what the odds must be for two families who have known each other before neuroblastoma to both have children develop the disease. Its shocking, horrifying, heartbreaking, and so many more words that my clouded brain can't think of right now. I do know Joey is a strong and wonderful boy with a fantastic family who needs your prayers. Please pray that this child will beat  cancer with as little pain as possible. Please pray that his parents and siblings will have the strength that they need to help someone they love so dearly go through something so awful. Please pray that a cure to this disease is found so we never have to hear the words "Its neuroblastoma" again. We love you Patti and we will do everything we can to help support you while your little one kicks cancer's butt!

Cookies for Cancer in Tuesday's Honor

This past Saturday I had the honor of participating in a bake sale through Cookies for Kids Cancer, a wonderful organization that helps individuals make a difference in the effort to raise money for pediatric cancer research. A bloggy friend of mine, Samantha, who I met because she was truly touched by Tuesday's story, put the bake sale together and asked me to join her. I was very excited to finally meet her in person and so happy to be able to do something in Tuesday's honor during Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. We set up shop at the city of Brea's Health and Wellness Festival and nervously hoped for about $250 in donations.

September 092

At first things were a bit slow. We didn't set prices on the baked goods and let people donate whatever they saw fit. Some people seemed to think the point was to get a good deal on their cupcake and dropped a measly 50 cents in the bowl. Others made up for the lack of generosity and gave $5  for their cookie. It warmed our hearts to see most people truly just want to give. Of course we had a few people who we wanted to just kick in the shins like the man who told us this bake sale wouldn't make a difference because it we wouldn't raise enough money. He went on and on about his wealthy friends and how much they donate to the City of Hope and then left a dollar in our bowl after taking two cookies. For a wealthy man, he was certainly cheap. There was also a man wearing a purple wolf shirt and a fanny pack who told us there was already a cure for pediatric cancer out there (evidently involving brown algae) and all we were doing was lining the pockets of researchers and doctors. Luckily people like them were far outnumbered by people who had nothing but positive things to say about our efforts. We even ran into someone who read's Tuesday's mom's blog! What a small world.

In the end we made over $400!!!! We were so thrilled with our success and we hope to do another bake sale in the future. I encourage everyone to check out Cookies for Kids Cancer here and set up a little fundraiser of your own. You truly can make a difference and it feels so good! I want to thank Samantha once again for putting this all together and letting me be a part of it. She is awesome!

Here are some sobering facts about childhood cancer:

- Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of our children, more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
-One in every 330 children will develop cancer before the age of 19.
- One out of every five children diagnosed with cancer dies.
- Three out of every five children diagnosed with cancer suffer from long-term or late onset side effects
- Cancer in childhood occurs regularly, randomly, and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region.
- On the average, 12,500 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year.
- In the US about 46 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every single school day.
- 2,300 children and teenagers will die each year from cancer
- Less than 3% of all cancer funding is directed at the twelve major types of childhood cancer.
- Wear gold, spread the word and show them you care
- Together you can help to find a cure TODAY

Miss you honey

I took a walk on Sunday up to the visitor's center at Torrey Pines. On the way back down I let Tuesday know how much we all missed her. I told her how I always felt her with me when I was enjoying nature. I felt her smile. It was warm. It brought peace. I miss you sweetie.

Tuesday Blog Party- Enter to Win!

Tuesday Blog Party Blog Post Header

From now until May 12th, I am holding this give-away to help benefit the Tuesday Fiona Whitt Foundation.
Tuesday was the beautiful twin daughter of my dear friend JK who bravely fought and sadly lost her 8 month battle with stage 4 neuroblastoma in January of this year.
My friends and I from Jess' multiples group have decided to put together an annual blog party to help raise funds to fight pediatric cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, as it is the least funded of ALL cancers yet one of the most fatal. A tragedy if you ask me. We CAN make a difference.

I am giving away something near and dear to my heart. A book that I have spent countless hours natgeo scanning over and plotting future adventures with, the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, This book is awesome. It is the best resource for planning a trip to a National Park and a great read. Of course the book I will be giving away is the all new and improved 6th edition and not my tattered old thing.

In addition to the book I will also give away a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION to the National Geographic Magazine of your choice whether it be National Geographic, NG Traveler (my personal fav), NG Adventurer (my other personal fav) , NG Kids, or the all new NG Little Kids. Check them all out here.

How do you enter to win such fabulous prizes? All you have to do is donate $1 to the Tuesday Fiona Whitt Foundation. That's it. A buck. If you want to donate $5 you will get 5 entries. If you follow my blog (remind me in the comments section) or start following me (let me know in comments) I will give you another entry. But you have to donate to the fundraiser to get the extra entry. Twitter about the Tuesday Blog Party and I will give you 2 entries. Post about my giveaway and you get 3 more.

Also, head on over to the Tuesday Blog Party to see what other fantastic items are being auctioned off by clicking the image below

TuesdayBlogPartyButton2

There are lots of great auctions going on and all it costs is one dollar to enter each one.
If you would like to make one donation, instead of many individual donations, please feel free to donate however is easiest for you.
If you end up donating $10, but only find 5 auctions you are interested in, you can use those additional dollars as additional entries :)

Thank you so much for supporting a great cause and remember to have fun!
Good luck!

Tuesdays for Tuesday

Tuesday's Tribute
A Jay and Deb Production.

Today's tribute is for all the girls helping organize the Tuesday Blog Party. Its a great idea and Brandi, Debi, and Alisha are doing great jobs organizing it. Please check out Debi's page here for more details. It is a great cause and it will be lots of fun.

What is Tuesday's Blog Party about? Well I think Debi put it perfectly:

My friends and I are holding a blog party in honor of Tuesday Whitt, my friend Jess' beautiful twin daughter who bravely fought and sadly lost her 8 month battle with stage 4 neuroblastoma in January of this year.
We are doing this fundraiser to hopefully raise awareness about this awful disease and to raise money for the Tuesday Fiona Whitt Foundation, where all proceeds go towards pediatric cancer research.
So, what is this all about? How can you get involved?
All you have to do is have something you want to auction off... period!
It can be something you made, something you bought, or simply something you would like to give away. Or, even something a company donates. (wait until you see some of the things we have to auction!)
For now, place this button on your blog, alerting your readers to our upcoming event.

Get In On The Fun & Grab a Button!

<a href="http://www.fundraiserblog.blogspot.com"><img src="http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k224/debi90/TuesdayBlogPartyButton2.jpg"/></a>

There you go. Something you can do to help both children fighting this disease and the families of those who have lost a love one. Grab the button and find something to auction. You know you have something in that pit you call a garage! So start searching!

Tuesdays for Tuesday

I wanted to start this Tuesday by telling you about another child who has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Nathaniel was diagnosed with a stage 3 neuroblastoma on Feb. 5, 2009 when he was fifteen months old.  He had stopped walking (and then sitting and crawling) over the days leading up to Feb. 5, and when they did an MRI of his spine they found the tumor which had wrapped around his spinal cord.  He had an emergency surgery on the 5th to remove part of the tumor for biopsy and perform a laminectomy to relieve pressure on his spinal cord.   The neurosurgeon who did his surgery thought it would take him months to recover his motor skills but he has already started to roll, sit, kneel and crawl.  Nathaniel and his family need our prayers and support. He is another reason why we need to bring more awareness and funding towards neuroblastoma research.

You may have noticed a new icon on my blog called "For the love of Tuesday".  It is a blog created by my dear friend Alisha for fundraising efforts and news on how you can help our crusade to against neuroblastoma in Tuesday's name. Please take the time to check out this blog and subscribe to its feed. This is where we will be posting opportunities to help and many other things that fabulous people across the world are doing to help children with cancer. Alisha is also starting Pounds for Cancer. As motivation to  lose weight Alisha is going to donate $2.00 for every pound she loses to pediatric cancer research via the Tuesday Whitt Memorial Fund and encourages you to set your own goals and join her. It is a wonderful idea and great motivator. Click on the link below for details.

Also be sure to check out the new Tuesday apparel designs my friend Christy did in her Cafepress site here or on the link on the right hand side of my blog where it says to click and get your Tuesday stuff. . All profits go to Tuesday's fund. There are some cute things including mugs and journals. Come on, who doesn't need another mug?

Finally, I am planning on having a fundraiser in the Orange County area  in the near future so those of you who live in Southern California stay tuned. I am hoping to have more details in the next week or two and I hope that together we can make it a success.

Forever and always, dedicated to Tuesday.

Tuesdays for Tuesday

I am so excited about all the fantastic fundraising in Tuesday's name that we are ramping up to do. As soon as we have some things finalized I will be posting them here. I have had people contact me who have never met the Whitts but are passionate about helping the cause. That brings such a huge smile to my face. Anyone who wants to help is absolutely welcome. There will be alot to do. Please contact me if you are interested in having a fundraiser in your home town. I think the entire country is going to know about Tuesday and neuroblastoma by the time we are finished.

The pendant fundraiser was a huge success. Home Studio donated 10% of the sales directly to the family which came out to be $421.00. Not bad for pendants that cost $7.95 a piece! Steph and Mark at Home Studio were incredibly generous and contributed $79.00 more to bring the total to $500.00!!!! Amazing. Once again showing how one little girl is changing so many lives. Thank you so much to everyone who purchased a pendant and contributed to the fundraiser.  I hope to have many more successes in the future.

Moving Forward with Purpose

I am having a very hard time trying to figure out a way to write about my experience in Colorado. Maybe its because the emotions are still so raw. Maybe its because I am not ready for closure. Maybe I don't want to face the finality of it all. I don't know. What I do know is that I never want to have to watch another family go through what my friends are going through.

The service was beautiful. It started with a "waggie" ride in Tuesday's honor and continued with beautiful music, words of encouragement, and pictures of the child that touched us all. There were no dark colors. Instead there were pink balloons which were released in Tuesday's honor. JK and Charley held themselves together with the same grace that there daughter always showed. Their love for each other gave me faith that they will survive this.

The Whitts are beautiful people.  They are the type of people who just attract others with their spirit. Even in their sadness and mourning, love just exudes from that family. It often seems like tragedy hits the least deserving.  I believe Tuesday was given to the Whitts because they were worthy of her love and incredibly special gift. Tuesday has touched so many with her smile and her story. Tuesday is going to change the world. She has already changed mine. Through Tuesday so many have found God. Through Tuesday so many have become aware of what truly matters. Now, through Tuesday we are going to raise money and awareness of neuroblastoma and other pediatric cancers. In the coming weeks, months, and years I will be committed to helping Tuesday's family with fundraising. I will keep you all posted on our endeavors both large and small. I pray that our efforts will help prevent others from having to endure this horrible disease. Together we will move forward and make sure Tuesday's light will forever shine.

An Angel Has Gone Home

Tuesday all clean

Tuesday lived brilliantly. She affected more people in her two short years than most people do in a lifetime. She is at peace. Tuesday taught me what strength, grace, and faith truly mean. Thank you Tuesday for bringing me closer to God. I will always feel honored to have known you.

Please visit her mom's blog HERE and send them a prayer. Every Tuesday from now on will be her day on my blog. A permanent memorial for a child that touched us all.  I hope my silence on that day will be a reminder to you all to say a prayer for her family.  She truly is an angel.

Amazing People Doing Amazing Things

My friend Terri just wrote this post on her blog and I just don't don't have the energy to make it my own so I will plagiarize... I know Terri loves me enough not to report me to the authorities. :)

There are two blogs I want to bring attention to tonight. They are both doing wonderful things for Tuesday's family, yet neither of them have ever met them. I am so glad there are still people like this.
First, The Extra Ordinary, is donating $1 for every comment left on her blog post. All you have to do is leave a comment (there, not here). Doesn't get any easier than that! So go, do it now!
Second, Susan from Simply Susan is donating 100% of her profits from her online scrap booking store (until the end of February). Follow the link to her blog. There, she will direct you of what to do! SO many people love scrap booking, this should be another easy way to help raise money for this wonderful family.
There is also still the pendant fundraiser going on: Mine should be here Saturday or Monday. I can't wait to get them!
These beautiful pendants have been made specially for Tuesday by Mark, a wonderful designer at HomeStudios.
My good friend Sharlene went to him and asked him if he would be willing to design a piece for her to be sold for a fundraiser and instead he has designed two beautiful pieces and is offering 10% of his profits for ALL sales from now until Valentine's Day to go towards Tuesday's fight against neuroblastoma. This includes purchases of any of the items in his store! This is a HUGE gift!
These pieces are incredible, affordable & handcrafted
on Scrabble tiles! There are so many beautiful designs to choose from and even gift sets that include the necklaces as well.
Please take the time to look at his pieces and remember that you are helping a very sick little girl in the process.
Please go
HERE to see these beautiful pieces. Thank you!
